Eugene Shultz – Passes away with family by his side

The last several days I have been out on business, but I read that Dr. Eugene Shultz (Computer Security Expert) had passed away on Sunday afternoon October 2, 2011 apparently due to a fall after having had a small stroke the week or two before and had his family by his side as he slipped on to better peaceful things. This is a great loss to the security community and a truly amazing guy. I  had the wonderful opportunity to have lunch with Eugene in San Francisco at Hillstone (an amazing steakhouse), and also hung out with him at RSA the year before last. He loved his career andfamily with a passion and I wanted to take a moment to say, what a funny, loving and caring man he was. I remember walking with him to go to a vendor event and hanging out having a couple drinks with him and he laughed and joked with a smille the whole time. On the way he told me how excited he was about his family and how proud he was of them. I got the chance to meet one of his daughters and her boyfriend while we were walking to the event. They were equally nice and friendly people and joked and laughed about Gene. We’ve lost a friend and an amazing talent but he will not be forgotten. Rest my friend, put your feet up, look down on us with your kindness and watch as we continue to fight the good fight for you. You will be missed, but we’ll see you soon enough. Thanks for being such a good spirited man and thank you for your contribution to the world.

  1. I knew Gene for many years, we’re on the security rubber chicken speaking circuit together. Your write up is among the best I’ve seen, you have captured this essence of this fine man, or as we might say this Mensch meaning a person of the highest character!
