Is peak oil here?

A little off topic and more along the lines of national security... I was reviewing the current crude oil prices and some analysis of them, and it seems that we've hit over 100 bucks in the beginning of 2008. It seems to me that peak oil may have occurred. If that's true then we may be headed for some crazy times ahead.

Today I saw an article that just scared me so bad that I had to place it on my blog. Normally I try to stick to Information Security related topics. But I couldn't resist.

Summary of Article
Over the next 75 years, there is a $45 trillion dollar gap in Social Security payments. This means that the government will not possibly be able to pay the cash necessary to support social security. I know this is not new information, but geez guys, why the heck aren't we addressing it in congress? This should be absolutely number 1. This number is so big its incredible, I typed it below so you could see.

Commentary
That's an absolutely huge number.. With looming Oil shortages from "Peak Oil" and fiscal responsibility absolutely out of control, I can see the United States going through the same crisis as the USSR did, a total economic meltdown. Its such an important aspect of everyone's lives, but it seems that Americans are more sucked into reality tv than their own lives.
